Aragorn: “By my life or death, I can protect you, I will. You have my sword.”
Legolas: “And you have my bow!”
Gimli: “And my axe!”
In this iconic scene, we see three people pledging themselves to another. They pledge their lives and their weapons to help the quest to succeed.
The spiritual implications here are numerous. Many would point to the idea that we are called to fight together. And this is true. We can’t fight the battle alone. We are not called to be like Liam Neeson in Taken or like Keanu Reeves in John Wick. We aren’t one-man armies. We are called to fight together in a band of brothers.
But this scene was brought to my mind today as I was praying this morning. I was re-affirming my surrender to God. I prayed, “God you can have my whole heart, my whole mind, and my whole spirit.” That’s when this scene played through my mind. I realized that was exactly what I was doing. You have my sword. And you have my bow. And my axe. You have my heart. And you have my mind. And my spirit.
I was once again pledging my life, my whole self, to the quest and to the God of the quest. He is worthy of our pledge. He is the Great KING. Join me on the adventure. Join the quest of faith. Let’s fight the good fight together.
